MethodsNinety-six psychotic inpatients were recruited from the Medical Center of Louisiana and the Tulane University Hospital. Consecutively admitted psychotic patients were screened and diagnosed using SCID procedures (Spitzer et al., 1987). Patients were admitted to the study if they met criterion for DSM-III-R schizophrenia, schizo-affective disorder, or schizophreniform disorder and if they showed a duration of illness of 5 years or less. Twenty normal control subjects without a family history of psychosis were recruited from the housekeeping staff.
