Abstract Laboratory diagnosis of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection is improving with the development of new technologies. Quantification of the virus by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and evaluation of EBV-specific T cells, especially by tetrameric human leukocyte antigens, are noteworthy candidates for monitoring procedures in clinical laboratories involved in the management of transplant recipients. Standardization of PCR is essential for improving the quality of these monitoring procedures.
