This chapter outlines how the sociology of childhood developed and some key themes: intergenerational relations and intergenerational processes. It discusses the specific character of childhood work in the UK and considers ways forward for theoretical development. In the sociology of childhood, we have been lucky in having a European tradition, with a few sociologists such as Jens Qvortrup and Helga Zeiher who understood the necessity for rethinking childhood and brought sociological ideas to bear on children as a topic of interest to men and women. The author knows that a major aim of this special issue has been to consider what we can learn from each other, and especially how the Minority World can learn from the Majority World. Finally the chapter considers what lessons can be learned across the Majority and Minority Worlds to help us in our sociological work.
