Several recent studies have found that the majority of children in Sweden are happy, healthy and faring well This comes across most clearly when children are given the opportunity to speak for themselves The report by the Children’s Ombudsman ‘How much fun is that, on a scale of 1 to 10’ (Barnombudsmannen, 2005) found that the 1,900 children who took part in the study were, by and large, very satisfied with their lives They were satisfied with their families, friends, homes and schools, and believed strongly in the future The study found that differences between groups were relatively small, although children with disabilities were less satisfied than others, as were teenagers in the last two years of compulsory education1 (grades 7–9) and children living with a single parent Health was crucial to children’s sense of wellbeing, particularly among girls Although children living in residential areas with a high concentration of immigrants were more satisfied with their schools than pupils in other schools, concerns about violence and accidents were common in such areas Older children were more concerned than younger children, girls more than boys; most worried were children from non-Swedish backgrounds and children living in areas with predominantly immigrant population
