The follicle and corpus luteum of the ovary are richly vascularized tissues, a fact reflected by blood flow rates per unit weight that are perhaps the highest in the body. 1 This is not in itself unique; other endocrine tissues such as the thy roid, adrenal cortex, and pituitary also have rich vascular beds and abundant blood flow. Unlike other tissues in the body, however, the follicle and corpus luteum are transient structures. A growing human follicle, for instance, has a life span of 14 days from the time it and its cohorts are recruited until it ovulates. 2 The vast majority of follicles do not go through the entire developmental sequence but become atretic at some stage of development. After ovulation, the corpus luteum forms from the ruptured follicle but undergoes regression after about 14 days unless pregnancy occurs. During the average re productive lifespan, the human ovary could go through as many as 500 such developmental cy cles. Lifespans of the follicle and corpus luteum vary from species to species, but in all cases these structures undergo periods of dynamic growth followed by regression. An obligatory part of the growth of the follicle and corpus luteum is the growth of the vascular network that nourishes these metabolically ac tive tissues. Conversely, follicular atresia and corpus luteum regression are accompanied by
