How best to study the effects of genes and environment on US health? In the first of two commentaries, Walter C. Willett and his co-authors argue that investing in existing studies is the most efficient approach. Long-term health studies of many thousands of individuals are under way in several countries in Europe and Asia, with a view to determining the influence of genes and environment on disease. A similar project has been proposed in the United States, but as this week's two Commentary contributions show, it is a controversial idea.
