Partial Support for the Secretariat of the Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific (SC-WESTPAC) of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC)

The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of Unesco will establish a position within the IOC Secretariat for an Assistant Secretary for the IOC regional Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific (WESTPAC). This Assistant Secretary will provide staff support for planning and development of scientific research and service programs in the Western Pacific under the aegis of WESTPAC. These programs are expected to contribute to U.S. global change research efforts such as a the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE), studies of the Tropical Ocean and the Global Atmosphere (TOGA), and the Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment (GEWEX) now being planned. Funding for this position will be shared by Unesco; the Secretary will be located in Bangkok; office, secretarial, and other logistic support will be provided by Thailand; and additional professional staff support will be provided by Japan.
