这是一项由极地地球科学和北极计划以及界面、运输和分离计划联合支持的国际旅行赠款。这笔国际旅行补助金的目的是让旅行者与中华人民共和国中国的学者进行互动。活动包括：(1)1993年7月5日至9日在北京举行的第六届国际多年冻土会议上发表论文：(2)参加1993年7月10日至24日在西藏-齐海高原的实地考察；(3)参观化工部中央科学技术研究院和兰兹霍恩冰川地质研究所两个研究所。这些活动的共同主线是界面和运输现象与极地和其他低温气候下土壤行为的关系。旅行者是预测差异冻胀的专家。这种现象具有重要的工程意义，因为它的发生会对轨道、机场跑道、管道和建筑物造成重大破坏。

This is an international travel grant jointly supported by the Polar Earth Sciences and Artic Programs and the Interfacial, Transport, and Separations Program. The purpose of this international travel grant is to allow the traveler to interact with academics in the Peoples Republic of China. The activities include: (1) presentation of a paper at the Sixth International Conference on Permafrost in Beijing on July 5- 9, 1993; (2) participation in a field excursion tot he Tibet- Qihai Plateau from July 10-24, 1993; and (3) a visit to two research institutes: the Central Research Institute of Science and Technology of th Ministry of Chemical Industry; and, the Lanzhorn Institute of Glaciology and Geocryology. The common thread in these activities is the relation of interfacial and transport phenomena to behavior of soil in polar and other low temperature climates. The traveler is an expert in predicting differential frost heave. This phenomena has engineering importance since its occurance can cause significant damage to raods, airport runways, pipelines, and buildings.
