Mathematical Biology through Computer-aided Instruction

数学生物学通过计算机辅助教学这个项目涉及一门新的数学生物学课程，旨在教会学生数学思维，并能够在生物科学的背景下解决问题。实现这一目标的一个关键是数学理解和解决问题的能力不同于数学计算的技能。《数学生物学》还教授学生用数学运算来描述定量问题。因此，通过使用在工作站计算机网络上运行的计算机程序MATHEMICA来实现交互程序。本课程强调四个重要主题。在实验室会议期间，数据在计算机上模拟，并流入计算机辅助分析系统。实验、实验室笔记本、计算器和工作表以及期末报告被集成到一个系统中。数学生物学是一门二年级的课程，希望建立在普通生物学所学到的生物学原理的基础上，并为学生在高年级生物课程中使用数学做好准备。

Mathematical Biology Through Computer-aided Instruction This project involves a new course in Mathematical Biology that is designed to teach students to think mathematically and be able to solve problems within the context of the biological sciences. A key point in realizing this goal is that mathematical understanding and problem solving ability are different from the skills of mathematical computation. Mathematical Biology also teaches students to formulate the description of quantitative problems in terms of mathematical operations. Accordingly, an interactive program is being implemented by use of the computer program Mathematica running on a network of workstation computers. The course emphasizes four important themes. During laboratory sessions data are simulated on the computer and flow into a computer aided analysis system. Experiments, the laboratory notebook, the calculator and worksheets, and final reports are integrated into one system. Mathematical Biology is taught as a sophomore course, and is expected to build on biological principles learned in general biology and prepare students for the use of mathematics in upper division biology courses.
