A GOALI award supports studies of the microstructure, mechanical properties, and tribological behavior of thermal spray functionally graded coatings. The university team will study the fundamental behavior of the coatings and coordinate with the two industrial partners who will prepare the coatings and test them under bench and field conditions. Two families of coatings will be studied - hard wear resistant WC-Co coatings produced by Caterpillar, and abradable MCrAlY coatings for high temperature sealing applications produced by Solar Turbines.
