The physicochemical and kinetic processes in ascending volatile bearing magmas will be studied in this project. This is fundamental for the understanding of volcanic processes. The main objectives are the experimental study of H2O and CO2 degassing and coupled crystallization processes in rhyolitic to basaltic melts during decompression. For the experiments, a newly developed decompression valve for the internally heated pressure vessel is used. The novel valve facilitates for the first time very low decompression rates at pressures of 500 MPa, allowing the simulation of realistic, continuous-magma ascent rates. For the characterization of the partially degassed and crystallized samples a FTIR spectrometer with a microscope and a focal plane array detector for determining the spatial distribution of the volatile components H2O and CO2 will be used. The experimental results are essential input data for the modeling of volcanic processes to optimize the risk assessment.
