Doctoral Dissertation Research: U.S. Internal Migration as a Response to the Economic Restructuring of Labor Market Areas' Space-Economies: 1985-1990

This dissertation research examines the role that migration plays in the adjustment of local labor markets when those labor markets experience structural changes. The research is organized around one central hypothesis, which states that the importance of migration as an adjustment mechanism varies widely across industrial sectors and occupations. Thus, the total amount of migration into or out of a local area depends not so much on the total change in employment as on the distribution of that change over different industrial or occupational categories. The study is therefore concerned with the balance between migration and local adjustments, and the results will provide insight into structural changes in local space economies.
