It has recently been demonstrated that bearings can be lubricated with powders rather than the usual liquids. Potential applications are for service in hostile environments, such as very high or very low temperatures, and high vacuum. Another potential application is as back-up lubricant. The present study will develop a realistic powder lubrication theory which can be used for design and analysis of bearings. It will be based on a systematic derivation of the governing equations to develop a Reynolds-type expression for the pressure profile and various design parameters. The analysis is expected to apply to the general three-body treatment of tribology, as initially proposed by Godet.
