Origin of the Mesozoic Yinshan Fold-and-Thrust Belt of Northern China -- An Enigmatic Intraplate Orogen

[9903012] davis远离俯冲带或碰撞缝合线的洲际褶皱和冲断带是板块构造理论的难题。中国北部阴山褶皱冲断带长1100公里，呈东西走向，横跨华北板块。最近的研究揭示了中生代时期主要逆冲和一系列挤压事件的存在。本项目将继续在两个样带中对阴山带发展的几何、运动学和时序进行研究。结果旨在测试严重的板内变形是否可以独立于外板相互作用而发展。

9903012DavisIntercontinental fold and thrust belts located far from subduction zones or collisional sutures present puzzles for plate tectonics theory. The Yin Shan fold and thrust belt of northern China is 1100 km long and trends east-west across the North China plate. Recent work has revealed the presence of major thrusts and a series of compressional episodes during mesozoic time. This project will continue investigation of the geometry, kinematics and timing of Yin Shan belt development in two transects. Results are aimed at a test of whether or not severe intraplate deformation can develop independently of external plate interactions.
