***9908390SantamarinaThe behavior of soils and fractured rocks is determined by the discrete natureof these media and by the inherent presence of multiple internal scales.Indeed, it is increasingly more apparent that the mean and variance of soilparameters are not sufficient to characterize a soil mass and to predict itspotential behavior. Furthermore, subtle yet important aspects of scales andinteractions among scales need to be understood to better comprehend soilbehavior. The goal of this study is to discern unique phenomena in soils given thecoexistence of multiple internal scales (spatial and temporal), and theireffect on macroscale soil behavior. The proposed study centers on the followinggeotechnical processes: diffusion (selected because of its apparentinsensitivity to internal scales), drained stress-strain behavior, porepressure (generation, dissipation and coupling). These processes will beaddressed with integral experimental and analytical tasks. A complementaryresearch phase will be driven towards the development of engineering designprocedures.This research has the potential for the clarification and fundamentalexplanation of frequently observed behavior in geo-mechanic andgeo-environmental situations, and for the discovery of unique phenomena relatedto multiple scales and their interaction. Results from this research will guidethe development of enhanced procedures for the interpretation ofhigh-resolution site characterization data (e.g., piezo-CPT and geophysicaltests such as GPR and tomographic images). Furthermore, these results will alsopromote the development of enhanced engineering design methodologies thatrecognize multiple internal scales in global response (foundation engineering,dynamic response, contamination and remediation, petroleum geomechanics).***
