This program will utilize data from the Japanese/U.S. satellite, GEOTAIL, to study the magnetic merging process on the dayside magnetopause. The data will be used to demonstrate that inductive electric fields produced by impulsive penetration of plasma into the magnetopause play an important role in the reconnection process that underlies magnetic merging.
