CAREER: Scalable High-Performance Information Servers for Internet-based Multimedia Applications

PI: Prashant ShenoyThe rapid growth of the Internet coupled with advances in computingand communication technologies has led to the emergence of a varietyof distributed multimedia applications. Realizing such applicationsrequires the development of large-scale information servers that canefficiently manage heterogeneity in data characteristics andapplication requirements. The main objective of the proposed researchis to develop scalable, high-performance information servers to enableInternet-based multimedia applications and utilize the results of thisresearch to enhance the effectiveness of imparting education.The proposed research will address three key issues: (i) the design ofa scalable, general-purpose multimedia file system based onnetwork-attached storage, (ii) the design of a coordinated resourcemanagement framework for efficiently managing resources on largeservers, and (iii) the design of a multimedia proxy cache architecturefor efficiently delivering data to applications over wide areanetworks. The research methodology for addressing these problems iseclectic, relying on a combination of analysis, simulation, andprototype implementation.The proposed teaching efforts will focus on the development of acurriculum in multimedia systems and the use of multimedia technologyto improve the effectiveness of distance and classroom education. Theproposed effort will: (i) lead to development of hands-on,laboratory-based graduate and undergraduate courses in multimedia, and(ii) explore the use of multimedia technology to develop moreeffective pedagogical aids.
