This project, acquiring a large laboratory testbed for multi-institutional, cross-disciplinary, experimental research on embedded systems and sensor networks, enables research in the:-Design of multi-tier modal sensor networks;-Data management issues for sensor networks; -Memory management issues for embedded platforms; and -Hierarchical power management for embedded and sensor systems.This cross-disciplinary research addresses networking, operating systems, distributed systems, architecture, and mobile computing issues that arise in embedded systems and sensor networks. Anticipated results consist of novel algorithms, protocols, and models for designing such systems. The experimental and prototyping efforts should provide new insights into the system design issues.The Five College Consortium (Amherst, Mount Holyoke, Smith, Hampshire, and U Mass) will partake of the infrastructure.Broader Impact: This infrastructure, promoting multi-institutional, cross-disciplinary and experimental research, should have direct impact on undergraduates, promoting also student diversity. The institutions are solid; Mount Holyoke is an all women institution. The collaboration enables exposure to high-quality research and should have direct impact in curriculum development. Many of the undergraduates being serviced should continue unto graduate school.
