Energy Efficient Operating Systems for Pocket ComputersDirk Grunwald, Dept. of Computer Science, Univ. of Colorado, BoulderMany techniques have been proposed to combat processor and systempower demands. We propose to conduct a systematic investigation ofpower conservation mechanisms and policies. The research willconstruct an open-source, power-efficient operating system suitablefor next-generation, powerful palm-top computers. Moreover, we willexamine the possible energy reduction from application level energymanagement using a a variety of runtime environments that collaborateswith the operating system to limit or control application-levelresource usage, including threads memory management. The research willuse existing high performance processors designed for mobile computingas well as simulator processor power models to assess how powerdemands can be reduced with minimal user intervention. This researchis significant because it addresses one of the paramount issueshampering the widespread use of ubiquitous computing, the high powerdemand of such computers.
