AbstractAward: DMS-0090101Principal Investigator: Steven A. BleilerThis award will provide partial support for speakers and others atsemiannual conferences in the series known as the ``Cascade TopologySeminar,'' over a three-year period beginning in 2001. Theseconferences will be held at various universities in the northwesternUnited States and southwestern Canada, including the Universities ofOregon, Washington, and Puget Sound, and Boise, Portland, and OregonState Universities. Typically there will be half a dozen principalspeakers on topics ranging widely over geometry and topology, themajority from outside the home institutions of the Seminar, and morethan fifty participants altogether, roughly half of them faculty andhalf of them graduate students, as well as an occasional undergraduatestudent. Participation by younger mathematicians, by women, and byunderrepresented minorities is encouraged.The mathematics presented in meetings of the Cascade Topology Seminarranges widely over topology and geometry. Topological issues includealgebraic and geometric methods for describing and characterizingspatial problems such as the challenge of recognizing whether twoknotted curves in three-space are essentially identical. Geometrictopics addressed in the Seminar include differential geometry, whichemphasizes measures of the curvature of spaces and the consequences ofcurvature for analytic problems, as well as algebraic geometry, whichhas its roots in the study of families of solutions to polynomialequations.AbstractAward: DMS-0090101Principal Investigator: Steven A.
