AbstractAward: DMS-0803213Principal Investigator: Steven A. BleilerThis grant partially supports the speakers and participants atconferences of the Cascade Topology Seminar (CTS). During thethree-year grant period May 1, 2008 - April 30, 2011, meetings ofthe CTS are scheduled at semiannual intervals. These conferenceswill be held at various universities in the Northwestern UnitedStates and Southwestern Canada. Universities currently active inthe CTS are the Universities of British Columbia, Calgary,Nevada-Reno, Oregon, Puget Sound, Victoria, and Washington, andBoise, California-Chico, Oregon, and Portland State Universities.The basic goals of the CTS include providing for frequentcontacts between workers in similar fields, to allow participantsto keep abreast of recent developments by bringing in speakersfrom outside the region, to enable graduate students andtopologists in the Pacific Northwest and Southwestern Canada tohear, consult, and possibly collaborate with the outside speakersand members of other institutions, and to provide an opportunityfor local people to lecture on their own work. Topics coveredare not limited, however, the interests of the various organizerstend to be mirrored by the interests of the participants. Thus,the seminar programs usually concern algebraic, geometric, or lowdimensional topology, differential or algebraic geometry, orcombinatorial group theory. The CTS also coordinates itsactivities with the Pacific Northwest Geometry Seminar and theWestern States Geometric Topology Workshop with whom jointmeetings have occasionally been held.
