CAREER: Delivering Computational Services over the Internet

This integrated research and education proposal describes a newserver-centric approach to computing based on the premise thatadvances in network speed and ubiquity have created the conditions inwhich a computer utility can be used to deliver computational servicesover the Internet to end users. The computer utility model describedis one in which users' entire computing environment, including allapplications, data, and the window system, reside onprofessionally-managed servers. Users can then access their computingenvironments from any Internet-enabled client device. The proposedresearch will focus on three areas: (1) remote display technologies toenable remote graphical access to applications without requiring anyapplication modifications, (2) server resource management mechanismsto deliver guaranteed levels of performance to large numbers ofinteractive users, and (3) server cluster resource management thatwill effectively load balance, allocate, and reliably providecomputing resources from a cluster of servers to users and groups ofusers. The proposal also describes how the research will be appliedand integrated with curriculum development efforts to develop an ITdistance learning education laboratory for teaching systems courses,particularly operating systems.
