AbstractAward: DMS-0314797Principal Investigator: Edward C. TurnerThis award provides partial support for the featured speakers andfor some graduate students to attend the 2003 and 2004 AlbanyGroup Theory Conferences. The conferences will be the thirteenthand fourteenth in a series of conferences dedicated to theinterplay between group theory and topology. There will be sevenmain speakers, each of whom will give a one hour talk. Inaddition, there will be 20 - 25 short talks by participants. Theconference will be held at the Rensselaerville Conference Centerin October of 2003 and 2004. Further information is available athttp://nyjm.albany.edu/~ted/03conf.html.Groups are mathematical objects that abstract the essentialproperties from the collection of all symmetries of a geometricobject (for example, think of all eight symmetries of a square,which can be composed of rotations about the center and ofreflections about a diagonal). We can often turn this process ofabstraction around and treat groups as geometric objects in theirown right, with consequences for problems that originate inalgebra, topology, combinatorics, and computability.
