An estimated 4,050 pieces of Max Liebermann correspondence are known to have survived: around 850 letters received by the artist, and more than 3,200 send by him to others. The aim of the project is, by 2019, to publish this entire correspondence as eight volume critical edition. The proposed 36-month period of support from the DFG would cover the publication of the final two volumes (7 and 8) and a supplement volume.
