Seshaiyer The investigator organizes a symposium on mathematical andcomputational modeling of biological systems at Texas TechUniversity from November 6-8, 2003. The conference consists of aseries of lectures given by outstanding scholars who havecontributed extensively to the central theme. The talks cover abroad range of topics, including the mathematics of cardiacarrhythmias, past successes and future challenges in continuummechanics of soft biological tissues, a 20 year retrospective ofthe Chay-Keizer model, tumor mechanics, computational biofluiddynamics, and computational models of cardiovascular surgeryplanning. The main objectives of the meeting are to: (a)disseminate the most recent advances in mathematical andcomputational approaches in understanding biological systems, (b)increase the level of awareness in nurturing mathematical andcomputational research in biological systems, (c) to train seniorundergraduate, graduate, post-doctoral students and early careerscientists in interdisciplinary aspects of problem solving, and(d) initiate and promote new collaborations between mathematicsand all areas of science, engineering and science education. The theme of the meeting is the opportunity to usemathematical and computational tools to understand biologicalsystems. The meeting includes experts giving lectures on diversetopics in the underlying theme, with the expectation to providemembers of the mathematical and engineering community anopportunity to learn about new research venues. Participantsinclude undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoralresearchers. The meeting provides a forum for the exposure andexchange of ideas, methods, and results in the underlying themeof the conference. The conference provides an excellentopportunity to assess the current developments and futuredirections in this area. Special efforts are made to encouragewomen and underrepresented minorities to pursue careers inscience, especially in interdisciplinary areas that bridge thebiological, mathematical, and computational sciences.
