PROPOSAL: 0347674INSTITUTION: George Washington UnivNSF PROGRAM: NETWORKING RESEARCHPRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR: Cheng, Xiuzhen TITLE: CAREER: Integrated Resource Conservation in Sensor NetworksAbstractDistributed networks of thousands of collaborative sensorspromise unattended systems for many monitoring, surveillanceand control applications. Sensor networks are expected to operate forlong time. This makes network lifetime the central problem for asensor network designer. This project pursues a system-levelintegrated approach to extend network lifetime. More specifically,new sensor location discovery methods are being developed that willconserve resources such as computational power and radio bandwidth withina sensor; new MAC protocols is being designed to optimize forlow power, low data rate sensor networks; novel approaches areinvestigated for data aggregation services such as event detection andtarget counting. Because sensor self-positioning, MAC control,and data aggregation services in a sensor network are strongly dependenton each other, their interaction and design are jointlyexplored using an integrated approach for extending network lifetime.
