Establishing Limits for Positron Plasmas -- Long Term Storage, High Densities, and Cold Beams

Phenomena involving positrons (i.e., the antiparticles of electrons) areimportant in many fields including astrophysics, plasma and atomic physics, and materialsscience. Much progress has been made recently in these areas through laboratory experimentsthat exploit nonneutral plasma techniques. This proposal describes a program of research tocreate and understand the physics of novel states of single-component positron plasmas in newregions of parameter space. These antimatter plasmas will be used, in turn, for a range ofscientific and technological applications.
