The Undergraduate Biomathematical Research Career Initiativeat SUNY Geneseo is a research-based program that combines new andrevised problem-based curricular components (e.g., calculus forbiologists, modeling biological systems, biological dataanalysis, discrete mathematics, graph theory, probability,statistics and computational molecular analysis) with researchactivities (ranging from biomolecular computing toindividual-based, evolutionary modeling of food webs) that pushthe boundaries of modern techniques in understanding complexproblems. Undergraduate students participate in this trainingprogram as they blend new classroom-based studies with researchprojects at the frontier of biomathematics. Jointly-mentoredbiomathematical research projects are at the core of the programand these research projects serve as a stimulus for facultydevelopment and curricular innovation. The opportunity todirectly participate in these research projects serves as anincentive for students and faculty in the research areas ofbiomathematics The Undergraduate Biomathematical Research Career Initiativeat SUNY Geneseo supports a program at Geneseo that brings thecontinuing commitment of sixteen students in two related projectsand institutes broad, integrated curricular improvement in thearea of biomathematics. The project builds upon the currentstrengths of the undergraduate program at Geneseo and theexpertise of the four co-PI's. It increases the number ofstudents trained in mathematics and biology, and it increases thenumber of students and faculty performing research at theintersection of the two fields. It increases the visibility ofbiomathematics research at Geneseo and promotes undergraduatebiomathematics research in the western New York region andnationally. This project is jointly supported by the Division ofUndergraduate Education/EHP, the Biology directorate, and theOffice of Multidisciplinary Activities/MPS.
