Arnold, Fadil Santosa, Arnd ScheelThe mission of the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications(IMA) is to increase the impact of the mathematical sciences byfostering interdisciplinary research linking mathematics of thehighest caliber to important scientific and technologicalproblems from other disciplines, technology, industry, andsociety. Allied with this mission, the IMA also works to expandand strengthen the talent base engaged in mathematical researchrelevant to such problems. To this end, the Institute serves asan information hub in the mathematical sciences, hostspostdoctoral researchers at the start of their careers, conductsand sponsors graduate student workshops, offers opportunities formid-career mathematical scientists to change research directions,organizes programs aimed at students and researchers from groupstraditionally underrepresented in the mathematical sciences, andsponsors public outreach activities.The IMA is a national research institute that hosts scientificprograms on short (one week or less) and long (academic year) timescales, without permanent faculty or research staff. Most of theInstitute's programs are conducted in its Minneapolis facilities, butthe IMA also sponsors conferences and graduate summer workshops at itsacademic participating institutions. Those academic institutions andIMA's participating corporations contribute to the Institute'sprogramming and planning through dedicated governance committees.
