MedIX: MEDical Informatics eXperiences in Undergraduate Research

The proposed REU site is in the area of Medical Informatics and will addressissues related to the workflow driven acquisition of image data in anelectronic medical record environment, and the subsequent post-processing ofthe image information to improve the accuracy and efficiency of theconsumers of this information, notably radiologists. In particular,segmentation, texture analysis, classification and annotation of computedtomography (CT) images using computer vision and data mining techniques willbe emphasized.Since many racial minorities are significantly underrepresented in computerscience (CS) departments, the primary educational objective is to promotegraduate studies for bright, talented undergraduates - especiallyfirst-generation college students and undergraduates from groupshistorically underrepresented in exact sciences. Furthermore, since thedemand for individuals who see their career opportunities at theintersection between Medical Informatics and CS far outstrips the currentsupply, the second educational objective is to promote and encourageinterdisciplinary undergraduate studies in computer science and medicalinformatics.The MedIX (MEDical Informatics eXperiences in undergraduate research) REUsite will run for three summers, with eight student participants spending 10weeks each summer doing research both at DePaul University, IntelligentMultimedia Processing Laboratory and Northwestern University, FeinbergSchool of Medicine, Imaging Informatics Laboratory.
