ABSTRACTThis is a proposal requesting support for the U.S. participation in a three-nation meeting(U.S., Turkey, and Japan) to produce a brief book on the seismicity and seismicvulnerability of Istanbul, a metropolis of over 12,000,000 in Turkey.(1) Intellectual Merit: Because of the anticipated imminence of the earthquake, a largeamount of technical literature has been produced on these subjects over the past fiveyears. The object of the project is to synthesize this information and express it inlanguage intelligible to the reading public as well as to professionals involved in riskreduction.(2) Broader Impact: The book (with chapters on seismicity, structural vulnerability, andrecommendations for risk reduction) will be prepared by nine earthquake professionals, three from each participating country (U.S., Turkey, and Japan) and published within aperiod of six months after the meeting to be held in Turkey in early June 2005.
