In this award, funded by the Experimental Physical Chemistry Program of the Chemistry Division, Prof. Robin M. Hochstrasser of the University of Pennsylvania and his graduate research students will further develop the techniques of multidimensional infrared spectroscopy to unravel the complex spectra of spatially extended, strongly coupled systems. In particular, Prof. Hochstrasser and his group will develop two-dimensional infrared exchange spectroscopy to probe hydrogen bond dissociation and reassociation dynamics in liquids. These studies should provide a new tool with which to study hydrogen bond dynamics in structured liquids, a subject that is of significant importance in chemistry and biology.Besides the broad impact of the research on several areas of science, Prof. Hochstrasser will continue to train a diverse group of young scientists for careers in the sciences.
