VIII Symposium on Case Studies in Bayesian Statistics

Case Studies in Bayesian Statistics VIII is the eighth workshop in theseries that was begun in 1991. These workshops aim to advancestatistical practice by examining Bayesian methods in specific appliedcontexts. The workshops are held in odd years at Carnegie MellonUniversity in early fall. The eighth workshop is planned for September16--17, 2005. The objectives of the workshop, "Case Studies in Bayesian StatisticsVIII" is are to explore the interplay of statistical theory andpractice in the context of substantive scientific research; to promotethe continued development of Bayesian statistics by highlightingproblems in the sciences that require non-standard approaches; toprovide an opportunity for scientists and statisticians to presenttheir work in depth, highlighting both the scientific background andthe analytical approaches; and to encourage dissemination of thefindings presented at the workshop via well-documented andpeer-reviewed case studies. As it has evolved, this workshop serieshas become an important meeting for younger researchers in Bayesianstatistics. The workshop aims to encourage young researchers,including graduate students, to present their applied work; provide asmall meeting atmosphere to facilitate the interaction of youngresearchers with senior colleagues; expose young researchers toimportant challenges and opportunities in collaborative research; andinclude as participants women, under-represented minorities andpersons with disabilities who might benefit from the small workshopenvironment.
