Workshop Proposal: Comparison and Integration of Paleoelevation Measurement Approaches

A workshop entitled "Comparison and Integration of Paleoelevation Measurement Approaches" is being held at Lehigh University in order to develop a means to resolve the apparent discrepancy between paleoelevation estimates determined using various proxies for paleoelevation (geomorphology, fission tracks and unroofing, cosmogenic nuclides and exposure ages, stratigraphy in destination basins, paleoflora, oxygen-isotopes of authigenic minerals, vesicular basalts). Workshop participants are taking the first step toward this by: (1) presenting each of the existing proxies and approaches to paleoelevation measurement; (2) identifying the scope and limitations of each technique; (3) assessing potential sites and time intervals for coordinated analysis; (4) outlining a plan of attack for a coordinated effort; and (5) establishing a set of results to be generated by each participating group, and a deadline for results. A protocol for analysis, involving a study region (e.g. Colorado Plateau, Tibet, etc.), a specific time interval (e.g. Holocene, Eocene-Oligocene, etc.), and a minimum temporal resolution (e.g. 10 data points in 10 million years) is being developed by the conferees.
