A Proposal of the Renewal of the Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS)

Inaugurated in 2003, the Banff International Research Station (BIRS) hasdeveloped, through a unique scientific partnership between the UnitedStates and Canada, into a tremendous resource for the world's scientificcommunity. In 2006, the two countries will be joined by Mexico to makeBIRS the premiere research center for mathematical sciences in NorthAmerica.Starting in 2006, BIRS will host an expanded schedule of weeklyworkshops, pursuing an extremely broad program, embracing all aspects ofthe mathematical sciences, from the most fundamental work on the greatproblems of algebra, geometry and analysis to modern pure and appliedmathematics, theoretical and applied statistics, financial and industrialmathematics, the mathematics of information technology and computerscience, bio-mathematics and math education. BIRS provides an environmentthat optimizes creative interaction and the exchange of ideas, knowledge andmethods within the mathematical sciences and with related sciences andindustry. Recent PhD's and graduate students as well as members ofunderrepresented groups are especially encouraged to organize andparticipate in BIRS activities.BIRS is administered by the Pacific Institute for the MathematicalSciences (PIMS) with the support of the Berkeley-based MathematicalSciences Research Institute (MSRI), the MITACS Network of Centres ofExcellence, as well as the Instituto de Matematicas at the NationalUniversity of Mexico (UNAM). The BIRS scientific program is developed byan independent Scientific Advisory Board consisting of thirty of the mosteminent mathematical scientists in the world.
