0521558FerreThis Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) Program grant supports acquisition of a Princeton Measurements 3900-04 Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM) for the Geology Department at Southern Illinois University. The PI, Eric Ferre, will use the VSM to develop methods for measurement of the high field anhysteresis of magnetic susceptibility (HFAMS) and to train students in magnetic measurements. The HFAMS method can resolve the respective contributions of paramagnetic and ferromagnetic sources to the anhysteresis of magnetic susceptibility. The VSM will complement an existing susceptometer and will facilitate research in structural geology and tectonics that requires analysis of magnetic rock fabrics. The PI's research focuses on testing flow models in the lower continental crust and in the lithospheric mantle and the VSM will enable new studies of the magnetic properties of fault rocks which have experienced partial melting (psuedotachylites). The addition of a VSM in the SIU Rock Magnetics Lab will make it a unique analytical facility in the Illinois-Missouri-Kentucky region, will facilitate training of female students, and foster international research collaborations.***
