he first Arkansas-Oklahoma workshop in topology and geometry will beheld at the University of Arkansas May 18-20, 2005. The purpose ofthe conference is to bring together researcher from the region as wellas researcher whose work is directly relevant to researchers in thearea, in the fields of 3-manifolds (hyperbolic 3-manifolds, Dehnsurgery, Heegaard splittings, efficient triangulations) and relatedsubjects (2 and 3 dimensional hyperbolic geometry and geometric grouptheory).In more general terms, topology is the branch of mathematics that,much like geometry, studies shapes. In recent years much progress hasbeen made in understanding 3 and 4 dimensional topology. Althoughtopology ignores some of the basic terms of geometry (such as lengtharea or volume) much of recent progress shows very deep connectionbetween topology and geometry, especially hyperbolic geometry. Ourgoal in this conference is bringing together people from closelyrelated (yet distinct) fields in order to update each other on recentdevelopments and establish future collaboration.
