The Mw 9.3 Indonesian Earthquake and the Holocene Great Earthquake Record from the Northern Sumatran Subduction Zone

The objective of this project is to generate a paleoseismic record for the Sunda subduction zone, which includes the segment that ruptured during the earthquake and caused the Sumatran tsunami in 2004. A variety of techniques for correlating turbidites with seismic events would be employed: cores will be recovered and studied for biostratigraphy, magnetic and isotope records, and will be carbon dated. The PI has undertaken similar studies along the Cascadia margin with some success. A research cruise on R/V Melville is planned for FY08 to collect the necessary data. The study has important societal relevance as the results of the work would benefit hazard assessment. International collaboration with Indonesia and Japan will also contribute to the broader impacts of the project.
