Ross kar@cs.columbia.eduColumbia UniversityCache-Aware Database Systems on Modern Multithreading ProcessorsThis project studies how to best utilize the resources available inmodern processors in the development of database system software. Aprimary objective is avoiding cache interference between threads inmultithreaded and multi-core processors, so that performance scaleswell as the number of cores/threads increases. A variety oftechniques are considered, including multi-threaded algorithm design,threads explicitly devoted to resource management, and schedulingalgorithms that are aware of thread interference patterns.Simulations and implementations on real hardware are used to measurethe effectiveness of each approach.The project will result in the development of algorithms designed forthe global management (and minimization) of processor- andmemory-related delays in database systems. Based on preliminaryexperiments, overall improvements in throughput of thirty to fiftypercent are expected. A database prototype will be developed, andmade available for download over the web.This project has relevance to commercial and public-domain databasesystems. Performance improvements would enhance the experience ofdatabase system users, and reduce hardware requirements for a givenlevel of performance. This project makes significant contributions toeducation through reseach projects, a new advanced course, and byproviding a prototype system for use by others.Project-related information can be found athttp://www.cs.columbia.edu/~kar/fastqueryproj.html
