CAREER: CHEMICAL METHODS FOR SELECTIVE PROTEOME ANALYSIS

Professor Gavin E. Reid of Michigan State University is supported by the Analytical and Surface Chemistry Program in the Division of Chemistry to develop a range of new derivatization strategies that will allow the incorporation of a "fixed charge" onto targeted amino acid residues within peptides, to enable selective identification and quantitation of specific groups of peptides from complex mixtures of protein digests. The project will contribute to the fundamental knowledge in gas phase charge-directed peptide fragmentation, and will add new reagents and analytical tools for protein identification by mass spectrometry. The industrial outreach component of this project is expected to positively impact graduate and undergraduate students involved in this project.The emergence of mass spectrometry as a major bioanalytical tool is the product of both innovations in instrumentation and new ionization chemistries that can be applied to complex biomolecules. This work will have significant impact in areas of analytical chemistry, biological chemistry, and biology.
