REU Site: Mountains and Minds: A Program in Chemical Biology

This award by the Chemistry and Biological Sciences Divisions support a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) site at Montana State University for the summers of 2006-2008. The program director is Mary Cloninger. Ten students each year will do research in the following areas of chemical biology: proteomics, protein structure-function relationships, protein-small molecule interactions, protein macromolecule interactions, post-translational modifications of proteins, and enzymology. Participants will conduct ten weeks of research and attend weekly workshops and group meetings to learn about state of the art instrumentation and methods for chemical biology. Tribal college students from Salish Kootenai College will have the option of working for the whole summer at MSU or of returning to their home institution for part of the summer. Prominent Native American scientists and other chemical biologists will be invited to visit MSU to serve as role models for the REU students. Students will write a final paper and present a poster about their summer research.
