OISE-0554393ValentineThis award supports a series of visits to Korea over 24 months to plan a collaborative research and education program devoted to advanced modeling and computation of nonlinear fluid-structure interactions of actively controlled, flexible suspension bridges. Professors Daniel Valentine and Pier Marzocca, Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering, Clarkson University will meet with Professor In Lee, Department of Aerospace Engineering, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) to establish an international team to attack the problems of hazard mitigation of devil structures and, in particular, long-span bridges. Fluid-structure interactions include the action of high-speed wind and waves, e.g. the action of natural disasters, such as tornadoes, hurricanes, and tsunamis. Other extreme loading conditions such as explosives and collisions are also part of this research. Because of the complexity of civil structures, such interdisciplinary research requires sophisticated analytical and computational tools as well as a variety of experiences and expertise.
