Bandgap and Composition Engineering of Semiconductor Nanocrystal

This award in the Inorganic, Bioinorganic and Organometallic Chemistry program supports research by Professor Xiaogang Peng at the University of Arkansas to develop methodologies for the fabrication of complex semiconductor nanocrystals in solution by using successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) or solution atomic layer epitaxy (SALE) techniques. One type of complex nanocrystals to be synthesized will have multiple quantum systems in a single nanocrystal and the quantum systems can be chosen to be either isolated from each other, optically coupled, or electronically and spintronically coupled. The second type of complex nanocrystals will contain dopants at given radial positions. These nanostructures will provide new and unique systems for developing technical applications in optoelectronic devices, spintronic devices, bio-medical labeling, photocatalysts, optochromic materials, etc. These nanocrystals will also aid the fundamental understanding of the interactions of quantum systems with tunable spatial and energy separation. This research develops new, less expensive and more environmentally sound methods for fabricating nanomaterials. Students will be trained in the chemistry, design and fabrication of these nanomaterials. The PI is involved in assisting industrial scientists to commercialize nanocrystals and related products.
