Ateach level the goal is to createempowerment and excitement aroundengineering and science. We have doubled the Alliancewide Indigenous STEM graduation rate from 46 students in2000 to 95 during the last academic year. Enrollments ofIndigenous students in STEM disciplines have climbed from344 students during the 2001- 2002 academic year to 795during 2004-2005. We have leveraged $3.2 million in NSFfunding with contributions of approximately $11 milliondollars from our many partners.Broader Impact: Our students are among the poorest peoplein the nation. The parents of some of our Alaska Nativestudents were raised on the tundra as nomads and are thefirst generation of people in their families to ever use money.Indigenous students have historically come to ourUniversities under-prepared in math and science. Wewould do years of remedial work at the University beforethese students were able to successfully complete aUniversity level course. In many of the high schools withhigh populations of Native students, coursework was notavailable that would foster success in STEM degreeprograms. We are now bringing Indigenous people who areprepared in math and science to Alliance Universities innumbers that are unprecedented at our institutions. They aregraduating and moving on to graduate schools. At UAA, theUniversity is in construction phase for a 12,000 square footbuilding to house the Pacific Alliance and the IndigenousPeoples Institute for Engineering and Science Education. The new Institute will be a focal point as our programs arereplicated across the nation. We are having a profound andpositive impact on the students, their families, and theircommunities that will endure for generations.
IndigenousPeoples Institute for Engineering and Science Education。
