Vortex Matter in Trapped Bose-Einstein Condensates

Specific projects proposed are: vortex pinning and pinning-induced structural phasetransition in vortex lattices; vortices in dipolar condensates where the long-rangeand anisotropic dipolar interaction may change the structures of individual vorticesor vortex lattice in a significant way; and quantum and thermal melting of vortexlattice and their relation with the presence of pinning or dipolar interaction. Theseprojects will provide a deeper understanding of vortex matter in trapped atomiccondensates, make contact with condensed matter theory and pave ways for furtherexperimental studies.
