AST-0607312INSTITUTION: University of Texas at AustinPI: John LacyCo-PI: Daniel JaffeTITLE: High Resolution Mid-Infrared Spectroscopy of Star Formation Regions on Gemini ABSTRACTDr. John Lacy and Dr. Daniel Jaffe, at the University of Texas at Austin, will undertake observational projects with the TEXES" instrument team. The program includes studies of molecular gas in star-formation regions, molecules in protoplanetary disks, and ionized gas in ultracompact H II regions. The molecules observed by TEXES are good probes of the effects of grain mantle chemistry and evaporation. The study of the chemical and physical conditions in the gas around massive young stars will be continued by the group, and extended to lower mass objects. Also, with the sensitivity of TEXES on the Gemini telescope, Doppler profiles of lines will be measured, providing information on the distribution of molecules and temperature with radius in stellar disks. Finally, the greater spatial resolution of Gemini will allow for the study of distant Ultracompact HII regions.TEXES scientists, including two graduate students, will support observations with TEXES by members of the astronomical community. An additional broader impact will result from K-12 teachers traveling to Hawaii to participate in TEXES observations.
