The proposal seek support to measure the attenuation and reflection properties of the Ross Ice Shelf at radio frequencies between 100 MHz and 1 GHz in the vicinity of McMurdo Station. This information is vital to the development of the ARIANNA high energyneutrino concept, which utilizes the Ross Ice Shelf and requires a medium with low losses of radio signal strength due to absorption and good reflection from the ice-water interface. As with any detector that involves the use of a naturally occurring medium, its physical properties dictate the viability of the idea. Several potential sites for ARIANNA are identified and it is proposed to measure the ice electromagnetic properties at one or more of these locations. It is anticipated that final site selection for the tests will depend on detailed discussions with the Office of Polar Programs.
