Research in molecular biology moves towards the analysis of complexity. We meet this development with the unique and competitive training and research network GRK1721. Our doctoral researchers decipher the structures and mechanisms of "complex macromolecular systems" in genome biology. GRK1721 is designed to tackle the next level of structure-functionsystem analysis of macromolecular complexes by integrating multi-scale approaches in life science, bridging previously separated disciplines in structural protein science, and training scientists in the emerging field of hybrid methods. Our research and training program will enable cross-disciplinary doctoral projects to address the structure, mechanism and molecular regulation of both transient and modular macromolecular complexes in genome biology. Our successful credit-based training and mentoring program with required and optional activities allows the doctoral researchers to tailor the curriculum according to their individual needs and project requirements. A core part will be advanced methods workshops that facilitate cross-disciplinary research and development of project specific hybrid approaches. We believe that the GRK1721 will help to train a new generation of scientists that are capable to successfully tackle future challenges in structural genome biology.
