This award will provide funding to continue limited support of some of the operations of the NSF-Arizona Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) Facility. This facility provides radiocarbon measurements for a broad range of NSF research projects. These studies utilize radiocarbon as a dating tool and as a chemical tracer for carbon pathways in nature. The role of the laboratory is to facilitate radiocarbon research for the greater scientific community, develop new and improved analytical techniques, conduct original independent research, and provide a framework for scientific and educational progress at all levels. The broader impacts of the research are derived from the widespread applications of 14C and associated cosmogenic radionuclides, which cross the boundaries between geology, archaeology, biology, chemistry, and physics.
