Complete Assessment of NGDC Data

This renewal grant will permit the continuation of an ambitious project to assess all underway geophysical data archived at the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), data that represent an estimated $3 to $6 billion investment for acquisition during research cruises. The shipboard data provide higher resolution than satellite data, but do not have the global coverage afforded by the satellite data. For the first time, this project will develop tools to assess the quality of the NGDC archived data and to apply corrections. This project aims to assess the quality of the underway geophysical data and to apply corrections both along-track and at critical crossover points of two shiptracks, where data should agree. The final product of this research will be new capabilities for the Generic Mapping Tools, permitting advanced analysis of crossover data and automatic handling of NGDC files, including various assessments of possible errors.
